Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla paid floral tributes to Dr. G. S. Dhillon, former Speaker, Lok Sabha, in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, on his birth anniversary, today.
Deputy – Chairman, Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh; Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament; Secretary-General Lok Sabha, Shri Utpal Kumar Singh and other dignitaries also paid floral tributes to Dr. Dhillon.
Dr. Dhillon was a distinguished parliamentarian, freedom fighter and journalist. Born in Amritsar on 6 August 1915, he actively participated in the freedom struggle and the Kisan Movement before taking up journalism after Independence. Through his work as Chief Editor of the Urdu daily Sher-e-Bharat and Managing Director of National Sikh Newspapers Ltd., he championed communal harmony and social unity. Elected to the Fourth Lok Sabha from Taran Taran in 1967, he was unanimously elected Speaker of the Fourth Lok Sabha on 8 August 1969 and was re-elected as Speaker of the Fifth Lok Sabha on 22 March 1971. He served with distinction until 1 December 1975.
The portrait of Dr. Gurdial Singh Dhillon, painted by Shri Samir Das, was unveiled by the then President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, on 10 February 2014 and is displayed in Outer Lobby, Samvidhan Sadan.
